Results of the 13th Annual Hong Kong TCA Scholastic Championship 2023

This past Sunday June 4th we had the 13th Annual Hong Kong TCA Scholastic Championships, hosted by The Chess Academy in cooperation with the Children’s Medical Foundation. 130 students from over 30 schools met in the beautiful Zetland Hall.

The tournament spread over 4 divisions, and consisted of 7 rounds of 10 minutes plus 5 second increment.  ActiveKids Founder, Grace So commenced the event with positive opening remarks on hoping all the players to constantly improve oneself and to do good for the community.  GM Andres’ gave the closing remarks on how well the players performed and that players should always challenge themselves to play at higher levels, then followed by CMF’s CEO Estella Huang Lung, who expressed the importance of not only physical wellbeing but also mental, fitting nicely with one of the benefits of playing chess. The tournament went very smoothly with a fun simul between 2 coaches and 12 players while the scores were being calculated at the end.

Division 1 included students under the age of 6, and for most this was their first competition. It’s always a joy witnessing as their coach and parent on how they will cope with the stress of competition; they all did great!

With 10 entrants in the section, this division was turned into a round-robin, meaning all would play all and would play 9 games instead of 7. Coach WIM Melissa handled the section.

He finished a clear 2 points ahead of the field with an overall performance of 1878. Behind at 5 points, in second place was Wong Chak Sum with a performance of 1355 and Su Bo Ruei with 1294.
