The TCA Novice Tournament were held over two Sundays, with the U7 and U9 sections played on Sunday the 12th and U11 and U18 on Sunday the 14th. The goal of the Novice Tournament is to allow kids with no prior top 3 placement to gain experience and compete in a tournament setting.
During the first weekend, a total of 28 kids in two sections competed over 5 rounds of 15 minutes per side. For a lot of the kids, this was their first time using a chess clock, adding a bit more pressure to an already stressful game, part of the learning and improving experience.
The U7 section was dominated by AKLC students Ryan Chen and Dennis Tie who in their personal game drew each other, both finishing with 4.5/5 points. Rounding out 3rd place was George Lu and Female Champion Twisha Srivastava.
First Place – Ryan Chen 4.5/5 Second Place – Dennis Tie 4.5/5 Third Place – George Lu 3/5 Female Champion – Twisha Srivastava 3/5
In the U9 section, AKLC student and older sister of Ryan, Renee Chen conquered the entire U9 section with a score of 4.5/5. Closely behind to round up the top 3 places were Shaunak Bhaterawa and Jacko Sze. It might be the first time a female player has won the entire section, great Sunday for the Chen siblings!
First Place – Renee Chen 4.5/5 Second Place – Shaunak Bhaterawa 4/5 Third Place – Jako Sze 4/5 Female Champion – Samantha Hui 1.5/5
The Upper section, U18 with 6 players, played a round robin instead. Meaning, everyone in the section would play with each other.
In the same number of rounds as the other sections, it was Luca Algozer with 4 points who finished on top thanks to winning his personal game against Alexander Siu who also finished with 4 points. Rounding up 3rd place was Kaden Kong.
First Place – Luca Algozer 4/5 Second Place – Alexander Siu 4/5 Third Place – Kaden Kong 3/5
