What a weekend. The TCA Freestyle Open returned with its strongest, most stacked field yet, and it did not disappoint. Upsets. Nerves. Genuinely spectacular chess from the first move to the last. If you weren’t watching, you missed something special.
The Champion Defends His Crown
FM Samuel Lam did it again. He successfully defended his title, and he didn’t just survive the field, he took down the number one seed to do it. That’s the kind of result that turns heads.
There’s more good news too. Samuel will be flying out to represent Hong Kong at this year’s FIDE Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan later this month. From all of us at TCA: go get it, Samuel. Hong Kong is cheering you on.
A Runner-Up Finish for a Familiar Face
Right behind him stood a name TCA knows well. IM Luis Medarde, who recently returned to the TCA team as a coach, fought his way to second place. Watching a coach compete at that level, and finish as runner-up in a field this strong, says everything about the standard he’s now bringing to our students every single day.
An International Test, Third Place and Counting
This edition also had a genuinely special guest. German player Constantin Mueller, rated 2285, came to compete, and compete he did. Mueller finished third with 3.5 points, drawing against champion FM Samuel Lam and losing only one game the entire tournament, to our very own Jake Chong.
Moments like this matter. Facing an opponent of that caliber gives our students something no training session can fully replicate, real pressure against real strength. It’s meaningful, and it’s exactly the kind of experience TCA wants to keep bringing home.
Jake Chong Is Not Slowing Down
CM-elect Jake Chong has been on fire lately, and this weekend proved it wasn’t a fluke. Fresh off momentum from TCA’s abroad program, Jake toppled the second seed in a result that turned plenty of heads in the room. This kid is quickly becoming one of Hong Kong’s most exciting young talents, and honestly, we can’t wait to see what he does next.
Why Freestyle Chess Is Taking Over
Chess960, better known as Freestyle chess, is having a moment. Top grandmasters love it. Casual fans love it. And at TCA, we’re proud to give Hong Kong’s chess community a dedicated home for it, whether you’re a scrappy junior or a battle-tested veteran.
So what’s the appeal? Randomize the back row at the start, and suddenly all that memorized opening theory means nothing. Here’s what that unlocks:
- Pure creativity. No book moves to hide behind, just calculation, planning, and gut instinct from move one.
- A genuinely level playing field. Heavy computer prep loses its edge, and sharp over-the-board thinkers get to shine.
- Wildly entertaining games. Unusual starting positions mean unbalanced, unpredictable middlegames, not the same tired main lines.
- Real fighting spirit. With no safe, drawish lines to retreat into, every single game demands active, aggressive play.
What’s Next
This was the strongest TCA Freestyle Open field to date, and based on how it played out, we don’t expect that trend to slow down. Congratulations again to Samuel and Jake, and to every player who showed up ready to fight.
Stay tuned. The next TCA Freestyle Open is already on the horizon, and it’s shaping up to be even better.
