The Hong Kong girls chess tournament results are in, and its first champion is back.

On October 25, 2026, The Chess Academy (TCA) hosted the 3rd Annual TCA Hong Kong Girls & Women’s Chess Tournament: 24 players, one section, seven rounds.

One section, every age

Younger players faced a wider range of opponents but could still win in their age group.

  • Top 3 Overall trophies
  • Medals for the top U8, U10, U12 and U14 players
  • Young player holding her age group medal beside her TCA coach
  • Age group medal winner standing with her TCA coach
  • Age group medal winner in a pink jacket with her TCA coach

A champion returns

Chen Yunqi won the first edition, then missed last year for school. With exams behind her, she was delighted to return.

Then she won again.

She was the highest rated player on the published entry list, at FIDE 1773. Yet the girls’ level of play impressed her most.

With 2025 champion Chloe Lau unable to play, it felt right to have her back. Two appearances, two titles. Can anyone stop her next year?

Seven rounds of learning

Seven rounds of close games tested preparation, calculation and decision making. Strong players got a real test, newer ones a taste of tournament conditions.

Rankings are only part of success. Stronger, more confident players also learn to:

  • Manage the clock
  • Bounce back from a tough game
  • Respect their opponent
  • Come back ready for the next round
  • 2nd place finisher holding her silver trophy with her TCA coach
  • 3rd place finisher holding her bronze trophy with her TCA coach

Pizza, friends and a birthday

It wasn’t all serious. Between rounds, players shared pizza and drinks and talked through their games.

We want girls to link chess with friendship and community, too. Seasoned regulars and first timers shared the same boards and love of the game.

U8 player Isaivenpa Surendra Babu celebrated her birthday on tournament day, joined by players, families and the TCA community.

Why our Hong Kong girls chess tournament matters

Our goal hasn’t changed. We want more girls playing chess.

We want them at ease at a tournament board, challenging themselves, learning from every game and seeing how far chess can take them. Here, girls gain experience and confidence, meet other players and celebrate each other.

This year’s returning players, new faces and rising standard of play were encouraging. We’re proud to keep building Hong Kong’s female chess community.

Thank you

Congratulations to Chen Yunqi, our prize winners and every player. Thank you to the parents, families, coaches, arbiters and supporters who made this third edition possible.
